For their part, Italy, absent from the last World Cup, tried to bounce back from their recent disappointments, but fell to England (1-2). The Squadra Azzura nonetheless took all 3 points with a win in Malta (0-2). We see a victory for the Spaniards, who have more certainty in their game. |

Prior to the 2023 Final Four, there had only been 2 editions: one in 2019 won by Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal and the other in 2021 conquered by Benzema's Les Bleus. Spain and the Netherlands came close to capturing the trophy, created in 2018. Finally, Italy and England had to settle for the bronze medal, winning out in the third-place play-off.

The Netherlands are favourites for this Final Four, having already reached the final of the competition in 2019 against Portugal (losing 1-0). Spain, also finalists in 2021 against France, a final they lost 2-1 and which prevented them from lifting their first trophy since 2012, are the outsiders in this final phase. Next up, Italy, winners of the last Euro, will have to face La Roja if they are to build on their 2021 title despite their recent difficulties. Last but not least, Croatia, third at the 2022 World Cup, are the underdogs. However, Modric's team-mates are not to be underestimated, as they were in the group with Denmark and France in the group phase.
How does the Nations League work?
| 👉 Competition structure: The Nations League is made up of all UEFA member national teams, divided into different divisions according to their ranking. At present, there are four divisions (League A, League B, League C, League D), each with a number of groups. |
| 👉 Group phase: Each division is divided into groups of four teams. Nations meet in two-legged matches within their group, with points awarded for results (win, draw, loss). Teams compete for top spot in their group. |
| 👉 Promotion and relegation: At the end of the group phase, teams are ranked according to their performance. The best nations in each group can be promoted to a higher division for the next edition, while the worst performers can be relegated to a lower division. |
| 👉 Final phase or Final Four: The top teams in each division qualify for the final phase of the Nations League, known as the "Final 4". This phase comprises semi-finals and a final. Teams compete in knockout matches to determine the champion. |
| 👉 Promotion for the Euro: In addition to the Nations League title, the competition also offers an opportunity to qualify for the Euro. The top teams in each Nations League group that have not already qualified for the Euro can take part in specific play-offs to try to qualify for the tournament. |
