Historical Serie A rankings
Founded in 1898, Serie A enjoyed its golden age in the 1990s, with a distinctive defensive and tactical game that is famous the world over. Today, it's still one of the best leagues in the world, with 20 clubs battling it out throughout the 38-day season for the famous Scudetto.
While there is only one winner, with a total of 4 Champions League qualifiers (see our Champions League predictions), the bottom 3 teams in the Serie A standings are relegated to Serie B. You can find our Serie A predictions as well as our Serie B predictions before each matchday. You can also find all the odds for the next matches to bet on Serie A.

Juventus outclass all other Italian clubs with 36 Scudetto titles, including 9 in a row between 2012 and 2020. They are followed by Milan's 2 rivals, Inter and AC Milan, with 19 league titles each. Other clubs such as Genoa (9), Bologna (7), Torino (7) and Pro Vercelli (7) have also managed to make their mark in this complicated championship.
Since 2021, Juve's dominance has come to an end, and Milan's clubs have returned to the fore. Finally, this year it's Napoli who finish 1st in the Serie A rankings, more than 30 years after winning their last title thanks to Maradona in 1987 and 1990.
How the Serie A ranking works
Points : Teams are awarded points according to their results in matches. A win is worth 3 points, a draw 1 point and a loss no points.
Serie A ranking : Teams are ranked according to the total number of points they have accumulated. The team with the highest number of points takes first place, and so on. If two or more teams have the same number of points, the following tie-breaking criteria are used:
a. Overall goal difference: This is the difference between goals scored and goals conceded by a team over the course of the season. A higher goal difference can be a decisive factor in deciding between teams tied on points.
b. Total number of goals scored: If the teams are still tied after overall goal difference, the total number of goals scored by each team is taken into account.
c. Results of head-to-head matches : If two teams are still tied after the two criteria above, the results of the matches played between these teams are taken into account. The team with the best results in these head-to-head matches is ranked higher.
Promotion and relegation: At the end of the season, teams are promoted or relegated according to their ranking in the Italian championship. The top three teams in Serie A usually qualify for the UEFA Champions League, while the fourth team qualifies for the Champions League qualifying rounds or the UEFA Europa League group stage. The bottom three teams in Serie A are relegated to Serie B, Italy's second division, and are replaced by the top three teams in the Serie B standings.
