Historical Liga MX standings
The Mexican soccer league, known as Liga MX, is one of the most important and popular soccer competitions in North and Latin America. The league is made up of 18 teams who compete in two tournaments a year: the Apertura (opening) and the Clausura (closing). The tournament format generally follows a regular-season phase, followed by play-offs to determine the champion at the end of each tournament. The Liga MX is known for its competitive level of play, passionate rivalries and electric atmosphere in the stadiums, making it one of the most followed and appreciated soccer championships in Mexico and beyond. Until the 2019-2020 season, Liga MX used a promotion and relegation system, where teams were relegated to the second division (Ascenso MX) based on their performance over several seasons. However, from the 2020-2021 season, relegation was suspended and the promotion-relegation system was modified, giving teams in the second division the opportunity to apply for possible promotion to Liga MX.
