18:00 - After a disastrous group phase, in which the Ivorians lost to Nigeria and more heavily to Equatorial Guinea, the CIV faced the defending champions, Senegal, in the Round of 16. In the Round of 16, the CIV take on defending champions Senegal, and the Elephants pull off a stunning upset by eliminating Sadio Mané and his cohorts on penalties after a 1-1 draw at the end of normal time. 👉 Qualifications : African national soccer teams take part in the CAN qualifiers. Qualifying takes place over several months, usually two years, before the final tournament. Teams are grouped into several groups and play two-legged matches. The best teams in each group qualify for the final tournament.
👉 Group phase: Once the 24 teams have qualified, they are divided into groups for the group phase of the final tournament. Usually, nations are divided into 6 groups, with each group comprising four teams. Each team plays the other three teams in its group in a first-leg match. Points are awarded on the basis of results (win, draw, loss), and the top two teams in each group, together with the best third-placed teams, advance to the knockout phase.
👉 Knockout phase: Teams qualifying from the group phase enter the knockout phase, which consists of the round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and final. Nations compete in a single match at each stage, and in the event of a tie at the end of regulation time, extra time and possibly a penalty shoot-out are used to determine the winner.
👉 Final: The two finalist teams compete in the CAN final. The team that wins this match is crowned champion of the African Cup of Nations.
