Real Madrid are the most successful team in La Liga, and the Merengues mastered the game, especially in the 60s and 80s. They are followed by rivals Barcelona, who have 27 league titles to their name and won the first championship in their first season in 1929.
Despite the intense duel between rivals Madrid and Barcelona, Atlético Madrid has managed to win several Liga titles (11), including one in 2014 and another in 2021. In the 2000s, Valencia achieved the feat of not only reaching the Champions League final, but also winning the league in 2002 and 2004 (in addition to 4 others in total). The dominance of rivals and champions such as Betis, La Coruna, Real Sociedad, Sevilla and Athletic Bilbao is particularly noteworthy. Last but not least, Barça lifted their 27th Spanish championship and their first since 2019.
