Historical Liga standings

Created in 1929, La Liga was known as the "Primera División" before changing its name to "Liga BBVA" in 2008 and 2016, before finally adopting the name "LaLiga Santander" in 2016. The Spanish league is the second most prestigious in the world, and enjoyed great success in the 2000s and 2010s. Currently made up of 20 clubs, who battle it out throughout the season (38 rounds) to win the prestigious trophy.

While there is only one winner with a total of 4 Champions League qualifiers (see our Champions League predictions), the bottom 3 teams in the La Liga standings are relegated to the Liga 2 standings. Real Madrid are the most successful team in La Liga, and the Merengues mastered the game, especially in the 60s and 80s. They are followed by rivals Barcelona, who have 27 league titles to their name and won the first championship in their first season in 1929.

Despite the intense duel between rivals Madrid and Barcelona, Atlético Madrid has managed to win several Liga titles (11), including one in 2014 and another in 2021. In the 2000s, Valencia achieved the feat of not only reaching the Champions League final, but also winning the league in 2002 and 2004 (in addition to 4 others in total). The dominance of rivals and champions such as Betis, La Coruna, Real Sociedad, Sevilla and Athletic Bilbao is particularly noteworthy. Last but not least, Barça lifted their 27th Spanish championship and their first since 2019.
