The Colombian soccer championship, known as Categoría Primera A, is the country's top division. It is one of the most competitive leagues in South America. The championship generally takes place in two tournaments a year: the Apertura (opening) and the Clausura (closing). Twenty teams compete on a two-legged points system to determine the champion. The championship format follows a regular season and playoff system, with the top 8 teams in Colombia's Primera A ranking advancing to a 2-group phase, with the top two teams facing off in the final.
