Ligue 1 ranking history
The French championship, known as "Ligue 1" and "Ligue 1 Uber Eats" since 2020, was created in 1932. It went by several names before being named "Ligue 1" in 2002. It is one of the 5 major competitions in European soccer. Over the course of the season (34 rounds), 18 clubs battle it out with different objectives, some of them aiming to lift the Hexagone or secure European qualifying places. Despite 5th place in the UEFA coefficient, there are only 4 qualifiers in total, including a play-off for the Champions League (see our Champions League predictions). Exceptionally this season, the fate of 2 clubs is at stake for the 2023-2024 financial year. The LFP has voted to switch to an 18-team Ligue 1 format for the 2023-2024 season. As a result, the bottom 2 teams in Ligue 1 will be directly relegated to Ligue 2, while the 16th-placed team will go through the play-offs. Conversely, the top two teams in the second division will replace them for next season. You can find our Ligue 1 predictions as well as our Ligue 2 predictions before each matchday. Paris Saint-Germain have just surpassed the record for most titles won, with 11. PSG are the only holders of this record, having won the 11th last season (and the 9th of the QSI era). Olympique de Marseille is not far behind, thanks in no small part to the prolific 1990s. The other Olympique, Lyon, enjoyed its golden age in the 2000s, with a string of 7 consecutive titles from 2002 to 2008. Other clubs have managed to hold their own against PSG over the last decade, winning a number of titles, including Montpellier in 2012, Monaco in 2017 and Lille in 2021.
